Shin'an Ishō Chikosakura ["Chigozakura: New Designs"]
Tanaka, Jihē [edited by].
Kyōto: Tanaka Jihē, Meiji 23 [1890].
Volume one, believed to be all published, of this little-known album of creative designs for embroidery, brush cases, vases, inkstones, weights for hanging scrolls, and other objects. The preface notes that the work was published to showcase the accomplishments of students at the Kyoto City School of Art. A list of the names and addresses of the contributing students is included in the backmatter. The charming and sometimes unusual designs feature vegetables, birds, insects, sea and river creatures, and so on. An inkstone in the shape of a squid is an irrefutable highlight.
"Volume one" (all published). One stab-bound (musubitoji) volume, complete, on double leaves, traditional East Asian binding style (fukurotoji). Light wear, soiling, and a few small wormholes to original wrappers. Bump to upper opening corner of textblock. Occasional small wormholes internally. [1], 20 leaves. 23.6 x 16.2 cm.
