[A collection of 39 fans]
Kamisaka, Sekka, Tomioka, Tessai, Takeuchi, Seihō .. [et al.] [illustrated by].
[Kyōto?: publisher/s unidentified, ca. late Meiji to early Shōwa period (1910-1920s?)].
A beautifully preserved collection of 39 eye-catching sensu fans featuring designs based on fruits, flowers, landscapes, people, and animals, by acclaimed artists including Kamisaka Sekka (1866-1942), Tomioka Tessai (1837-1924), Takeuchi Seihō (1864-1942), Hashimoto Kansetsu (1883-1945), Dōmoto Inshō (1891-1975), Shimomura Kanzan (1873-1930), Imao Keinen (1845-1924), and Yamamoto Shunkyo (1872-1933). Although the occasional use of other printing methods including lithography is apparent, most of the fans have been woodblock-printed. The majority appear to have been produced for apparel vendors (such as the famous department store Takashimaya) and banks. Helpfully, many of the canvases include the name of the artist. From the Meiji to Shōwa period folding fans were used in daily life, and seldom lasted a single summer, so the condition of these century-old fans is remarkable. A diverse collection featuring both flashy designs using metallic pigments and understated compositions by a variety of important painters. Illustrations by Tessai are particularly numerous.
Set of 39 fans. Rivet pins occasionally loose. Very minor occasional marks to printed canvases. Fans housed in a bamboo box. Fans measure between approximately 33.5 x 50 cm and 21.5 x 37.5 cm.
